Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)
What it can do for you
Photo dynamic therapy is a new skin rejuvenation procedure that treats a combination of changes in facial skin.
It’s an effective treatment for:
- mottled pigmentation and
- uneven complexion and tone
- large pores, uneven texture and acne scarring
Photo dynamic therapy is also very effective for treating acne. The results appear to match those of Accutane, but without the potentially significant side effects.
How it works
In combination with microdermabrasion, Levulan (aminolevulanic acid) is applied to the skin and activated by a light source. It destroys:
- acne and cystic acne
- precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses)
It has also been proven to destroy certain pre-cancerous cells in the skin.
First a light microdermabrasion will be done to prepare the skin. This helps unclog the pores of dirt and blackheads or whiteheads and exfoliates the skin.
Then Levulan – a clear prescription liquid – is applied to the area. A special “blue” light source or IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is used to activate the Levulan in a controlled fashion.
Meeting your needs
Following this treatment, your skin will be red – appearing almost sun burnt – for a few days.
To treat acne, it generally takes three photodynamic treatments, performed monthly. Combined with the appropriate at-home treatments, the results can be quite effective.
